Desert 1 - As you travel toward the Nile River, you end up spending the night in a village in Sudan. During the night, you hear loud explosions in the distance. When you awake the next morning, you find out that the Sudanese army blew up the well that this village uses for water. The village elders have a meeting with everyone in the village to come up with solutions to this problem. They ask you to take notes since you are more literate than many members of their village. [Task: Recreate the notes you took in your journal. Come up with 3 possible solutions. List 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages for each solution.]

Desert 2 - You are walking from one village in Egypt to another village in Egypt as you make your way to the Nile River. Along the way, you stop at a well to refill your water bottles. There is a group of women there who are filling jugs. You begin talking to them and ask questions about their lives. They are very open and excited to talk to you, especially about the differences they have heard about between their village and cities in the United States. They let you ask them many questions, and they also ask you many questions. [Task: Write a journal entry about your conversation at the well with the women.]

Desert 3 - While you are refilling your water bottles at a well, you find a small book. When you open it, you realize that it is a journal from a young person in a nearby village. It is filled with short entries that are each 1-2 paragraphs long. Each one tells about an event in the village and how this person felt about it. Most of them are related to water and weather. You are so fascinated that you begin reading some of the journal entries. [Task: Rewrite 2 of the journal entries that you read so won’t forget them after you return the journal to its owner.]
