Sahel 1 - You’ve just arrived in a village in Ethiopia that belongs to the Afar people. You make your way to the town well in the center of the village, when suddenly a crowd bursts into the area. Two injured men are carried through the crowd and laid beside the well; the village healer comes to help. The crowd is very upset and angry. You try to ask a man standing near you what has happened and he angrily thrusts a newspaper into your hands. He says the same thing that happened in the newspaper is happening to his village. He says that his “English is not good enough to explain,” but the newspaper will tell you (http://bit.ly/2L6Y5q). After reading the paper, you see the man and talk about the situation. In your journal, write about why these two groups are in conflict. Tell the solution that the farmer gave you, and tell what you think would be a good way to solve the conflict.

Sahel 2 - In Ethiopia, nomadic herders (aka pastoralists) and farmers are involved in a conflict that is becoming more and more violent the longer it goes unresolved. After reading a newspaper account of a similar situation in Tanzania, (http://bit.ly/2L6Y5q) use your journal to explain what the conflict is about and what has happened ecologically that made these two groups, who normally existed peacefully together, come into conflict. Be sure to include your suggestion on how to solve this problem.

Sahel 3 - As you are walking through Ethiopia, you come upon a group of Afar cattle herders who are moving their cattle to new ground for grazing. For hundreds and hundreds of years, the Afar people have lived a nomadic life as cattle herders. Ecological changes (drought) are now thrusting them into conflict with other cultural groups in Ethiopia. In your journal, record the thoughts and feelings about the conflict from the perspective of the Afar people you have just met. Think about how it must feel to have your whole culture face such major changes. Also include what you think might be a good solution for this issue. (Read this article for information about a similar conflict involving the Maasi people in Tanzania: http://bit.ly/2L6Y5q)
